PETITE PETAL

Prima ballerina, Petite Petal was said to share Anna Pavlova's dark beauty and lyrical dramatic style when she danced. In life, she exudes a serene, elegant star quality, evident in both her couture dress and her authoritative carriage.

Currently a ballet mistress at the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Petal's traditional teaching approach is enlivened by her command of the ballet language, her clarity of intent and by her authenticity. Her students love attending her classes.

Posing for her portrait in Ohio, during the 1990 Kirov tour which captured many Guardians and Arkangels, Petite Petal radiated excitement and enthusiasm. The natural shyness that she felt for speaking in a foreign language was willingly overcome. The spark in her eyes said it all - she was captivated by the sculpture process!

She is portrayed in a pose chosen to emulate her poise and grace, juxtaposed with the practiced skill of a a theatrical perfromer who knows she is at centre stage. Her arkangel evokes the imaginary character of Popiani - the dark and mystical beauty fantasized in the original Arkangel Drum Dance story.

"I must move, move away from this darkness unasked for
...make that second discoveryof fire: love"
